The planned route for our first year is shown in the map attached to this post. Leaving Pula in summer 2011, we’d like to spend a couple of months cruising the Mediterranean before heading out into the Atlantic Ocean. From the Canary Islands we will cross the Atlantic towards Suriname in October 2011. We are interested in following the rivers into the tropical forests there.
Depending on how much time we’ll have left, we may stop by at some islands in the southern Caribbean. After crossing the Panama Canal we will take a few weeks cruising along the coast of Panama and Costa Rica.
Around April 2012 we’ll be heading towards the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia, visiting the Galapagos Islands en route. As seeing the islands in the South Pacific is the main motivation for our journey, we plan to spend about five months in French Polynesia to intensively experience the Marquesas, the Tuamotus, the Gambier Islands, Society Islands, and the Austral Islands.
To escape the cyclone season, we will probably head back east towards Chile to cruise the fjords of Patagonia for a couple of months in winter 2012/13. This way we will be able to return to Polynesia for another cruising season.

I wish you the best of luck on your trip. I have been a sailboat liveaboard for almost 10 years now. I haven’t ventured out to much, but some day I plan to. I have a client that I manage the website for his rental house in Salzburg, Austria and have been thinking about sailing there. Maybe we shall pass by.

I do have 1 question about your geo-mashup map. How did you get the lines not to be connected straight to each others point? If you could point me to instructions on how to do it I would appreciated it. My map looks terrible( http://islandcastaway.com/maps/ ).

Regarding your question, above map simply displays a kml file (which is the easiest for static data). There are some kml editors around, e.g., Google Maps: My Maps (I think you need a Google account to use this). To export a kml file, right-click on View in Google Earth and copy the link to your clip board. Paste it into the address bar and change the “output=nl” (i.e., network link) to “output=kml”. Then you can save the file to your computer.

Well, I wish you all the best throughout your journey! Hopefully Leeloo doesn’t get seasick or so. I wonder if that’s even possible:)
Btw, wasn’t the K&K navy stationed in Pula way back in WW1? If so, the wreckage of the Szent Istvan must be there somewhere, too.
Anyway, here in Salzburg the “DSP madness” is at a moderate level right now:) so I’m enjoying a little time off studying for the last couple of exams, meh.
