Touring around the Austral Islands

After an excursion through the Cook Islands, Pitufa is back in French Polynesia! We are currently in the ‘Archipel des Australes’ and hop from island to island, starting with Maria in the Northwest and finishing with Rapa Iti in the Southeast.

Time for a new generation?

When we bought Pitufa 10 years ago, she was equipped with navigation instruments by Robertson/Simrad which were already 10 years old then. We are still using these instruments, despite their growing need for life-sustaining measures. About five years ago, the mast top unit of the wind instrument was the first component to quit. On the passage from Galapagos to French Polynesia we soon learned to… Continue reading »

Getting started in Tahiti

We arrived last night at Pt. Venus, were invited for pancakes this morning on SY L’avenir (thanks a lot!!), sailed down to Marina Taina at noon, had our new gennaker delivered in the afternoon (incredible, only 4 days after it was sent from Hongkong…), did some provisioning afterwards, organised a propeller repair for next week and reserved a rental car (it took us 1.5 hours… Continue reading »

Gambier’s Pearl Farms Increasingly Become Navigational Hazard

In recent years, the motto in the Gambier Islands seems to be “a pearl farm for everyone.” Many new concessions were granted, and the result is clearly noticeable. Not only were existing buoy fields massively expanded, but also countless smaller installations were deployed (and still are), scattered throughout the lagoon. Some of those new installations are made by one-man companies, lacking man-power, proper material, and… Continue reading »

Leaving the Tropics for a while

The Austral Islands are the southernmost island group of French Polynesia. Raivavae is just below the tropic of Capricorn, Rapa Iti even further down at the latitude of 27°35′. The Southern summer is the most pleasant time to visit these remote islands.
