New railing netting

The last couple of days, in-between the hiking trips with more and less luck (we still have not found the track from Paopao to Vaiare…), we replaced the netting of the railing around Pitufa. Sounds easier than it actually was–in total we spent 3 full working days cutting, attaching, stretching, swearing, undoing, reattaching and tightening the bloody thing. The old one had started to disintegrate… Continue reading »

Wahoooooo

After a series of fare-well dinners and drinks with Liesbet from Irie, we motored from Vaiare to Cooks Bay on the northern coast of Moorea on Thursday. On the way we caught a giant wahoo, so we’ll have fish for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next couple of days (in addition to some pressure-cooked jars for some time later). Don’t worry, we’re having a… Continue reading »

When to go where in French Polynesia

French Polynesia is a wide-spread and diverse cruising area. To make most of the different archipelagos it is essential to pick the right time. We’ve put together info on when to go where in French Polynesia here.

Anchor windlass overhaul

When we were about to lift the anchor to leave Raivavae two weeks ago, our anchor winch stopped working and I had to crank up the chain manually. But with Tahiti as the next stop, the moment our windlass had decided to quit was actually not so bad. With the help of a good friend here in the anchorage off Marina Taina I took the… Continue reading »

Preparing for strong winds

The weather forecasts show quite an impressive low coming towards us tomorrow. As the forecast predicts sustained wind around 30 knots from the northwest and much higher gusts we’ve moved to the southern coast of the island, have brought out two anchors, tied the dinghy down on deck, removed the rain collecting canvas to reduce windage, etc. It looks like we’ll be able to leave… Continue reading »

Quite some weather

Raivavae is supposed to have the best anchorage in the Austral islands, but from the N and W only the outer reef gives protection. We had pretty nasty weather last night and today. Strong winds from N-NW (of course!) and several squalls with gusts up to 45 knots caused Pitufa to rock and roll in the anchorage. It was particularly bad around high water (now… Continue reading »

Pitufa in the Austral Islands

The Îles Australes are the southernmost and least visited islands of French Polynesia. We have started exploring Raivavae and we’ll see how many more stopovers on the way to Tahiti can fit into our schedule…

Landfall in Raivavae

When we arrived at dawn, the island looked spectacular with clouds rolling over the vertical cliffs of the mountain, illuminated by fiery rays of fresh sunlight. As last night was rather strenuous with squalls, torrential rainfall, and confused, lumpy seas, we rested for a while after we’d dropped the anchor and only went for a quick stroll to the village of Rairua in the afternoon.… Continue reading »

Going bananas

No, we’re not going mad on Pitufa, but the stack of bananas we’ve brought from the Gambier has turned from green to yellow overnight–yep, all of them. At least we won’t go hungry, despite the fact that the fishies still refuse to hop on board. We crossed the tropic of capricorn last night, so we’re no longer officially in the tropics (the Gambier lie just… Continue reading »

Banging and clanging along

Last night the wind died down and Pitufa staggered through the confused waves with banging sails. We tried to optimise (tighter preventer, less sail area, etc.), but the nervewrecking cacophony went on. It’s not just the noise and the shaking that goes through the mast and rigging all throughout the boat, it’s also the knowledge of the damage done to the material that makes these… Continue reading »
