I’ve just put a page on our blog that, on the one hand, summarizes all weather forecasts we’re using on Pitufa. It includes weather bulletins, surface-analysis charts, cyclone warnings, El-Niño discussions, and of course how all those can be requested via Saildocs. On the other hand, the page also embeds all those current forecasts, so it may be a convenient all-in-one weather site for cruisers… Continue reading »
This page summarizes all weather forecasts we’re using on Pitufa in addition to grib files. It includes weather bulletins, surface-analysis charts, cyclone warnings, El-Niño discussions, and of course all Saildocs codes. It also embeds all those current forecasts, so it may be a convenient all-in-one weather site for cruisers in French Polynesia. If you have any recommendations for other forecasts, let me know so I… Continue reading »
We added a small cruising guide about Rurutu (Austral Islands) to our blog, click here to read it.
We had little info about Rurutu before we got there, so we had low expectations, but the island was a pleasant surprise for us. It seems it was a volcanic island with a lagoon and a barrier reef before it was raised by 150 m by tectonic movements, so now there are rugged makatea (coral) cliffs along the shore divided by flat coastal regions, long… Continue reading »
There is a new article in the current issue (Nov./Dec.) of Ocean7 as well as in the November issue of All at Sea Caribbean. It’s about our Atlantic crossing in 2011/12 and what we think about the ARC. When we bought Pitufa 10 years ago, she was equipped with navigation instruments by Robertson/Simrad which were already 10 years old then. We are still using these instruments, despite their growing need for life-sustaining measures.
Our little girlie turns 18 sometime in July, but we neither have to worry about university choices nor driving licenses… Instead we have to tend to the geriatric needs (special diet food, soft landing areas underneath companion way and sofa that go easy on the back, etc.) of our aging ship’s cat. We wish you many more happy years, Leeloo!

We met Paul and Frances (SY Monkey Fist) in Tahiti and were impressed by their project to bring used glasses to people in remote areas. Check out their homepage www.eyeglassassist.org! The sprayhood we bought in Croatia 8 years ago is still in good shape, the sunbrella and the ‘windows’ (I don’t know what material) are keeping up nicely, so we can only recommend the canvas work done by Dustom (check out www.dustomcovers.com). The threads were giving up after long years of exposure to UV light, so we spent 3 days restitching all seams and as… Continue reading »
