  • Pitufa’s Wind Atlas and Windrose Browser

Check out our Atlas of Prevailing Ocean Winds! As a convenient alternative to pilot charts, our site provides an interactive wind atlas and windrose browser. Unlike classical pilot charts, this atlas is based on satellite data (uniformly-sampled, unbiased), insofar similar to Jimmy Cornell`s Ocean Atlas (but that one is on paper and pricey…). We visualize world-wide ocean wind data from the SeaWinds scatterometer onboard the… Continue reading »

The first haul-out facility of the Marquesas (in the harbour of Atuona, Hiva Oa) is soon going to start operating (April 2016). • Horror tales from the fridge

One of the things cruisers dread is a problem with the fridge. To do any repairs yourself you’d need at least a filling gauge to check the pressure and to add refrigerant, a bottle of refrigerant gas, a vacuum pump (in a size a yacht inverter or generator can handle), soldering gear, a spare compressor, a spare electronic unit, a filter/dryer, some copper tubes and… Continue reading »

  • Whales!

From June to October humpback whales migrate to the tropics where the females give birth in the protected lagoons. We were lucky to see many of these impressive creatures from anchorages in Tahiti and even more here in Huahine. Yesterday a group of three whales (2 adults, 1 baby) came through the pass into the lagoon just off Fare and as we are anchored just… Continue reading »

  • Got our Polynesian Stamps

When the first explorers arrived on the Polynesian islands they were fascinated by the ‘paintings’ the locals had all over their bodies under the skin. The sailors soon got these body decorations too and the Polynesian word ‘tatau’ (or ‘tatu’ in the Marquesas) entered the European vocabulary as tattoo. The missionaries later discouraged tattoos (along with all other forms of traditional culture), but in the… Continue reading »

  • Just got a new mattress

When land-based people want a new mattress they just go to a shop and buy one. For cruisers like us, that’s just the first step. Then comes the explanation where the thing should be delivered to (what, you have no address, what do you mean, just come to the parking space of the yacht club?), to be repeated several times a few days later on… Continue reading »
